Allen Malpass

Allen began his career by embarking on a five year apprenticeship, obtaining a City and Guilds in furniture making from Brunel College, Bristol, gaining five Distinctions and two Credits.

He went on to gain further training and practical experience working for the well regarded Alan Peters in 1978 before feeling he had honed his skill sufficiently to begin his own business in 1983. Whilst working with Alan Peters he was asked to lecture at his former college by the head of department John Haynes, which he did part time for seven years. Brunel College being the placement for the Jonh Makepeace apprentice's.

Allen Malpass Cabinet Makers was established on the Dartington complex and soon earned a reputation for producing bespoke, high quality pieces.

Today Allen's substantial and well equipped premises in Bovey Tracey's traditional craft district, centred around Pottery Road, enables him to combine his craftmanship with the technical advancements of modern wood machining techniques. Working with home grown or imported timber species, purchased from well managed and sustainable sources, as well as solid veneered material. Allen's furniture is distinguished by elegant and uncluttered lines, precisely interpreting traditional and contemporary influences in achieving his client's aspirations.

He works mainly on commission to design pieces of furniture that will suit individual properties or specific rooms, always taking into account the client's personal tastes.
