Itre Furniture
Studio producing sculptural practical furniture handmade in sustainable native hardwoods, with ambitious steambent arches and rings, interesting textures and natural finishes.
In all my work I am concerned with man’s place in the environment. I am looking for the tension between the manmade straight lines and right-angles which serve us while hemming us in and the release which can come in circles curves twists and arches, the geometry of nature, the more feminine forms. The freeflowing language of patterns and character in solid timber make it all the more interesting. I use this contrast/conversation to create furniture. You could call it artwork which takes part in everyday life as chairs, tables, desks, beds, shelves or whatever. Craft is the act of attention with which the craftsman brings his body rhythm to the manipulable materials of his choice. The object of craft sustains the reality of human rhythms and being. This is the essential nature of the pure object, its function and art, in its true most contemporary sense.
If my furniture can express the drama and liberating peacefulness of the natural world and bring that into people’s lives, then it would help feed a tremendous lack in society today. I hope it provokes awareness of the vital importance of nature to us all.
