James Morley
James Morley Furniture
"If furniture bore any resemblance to the person that made it, then James Morley's Devon workshop would be full of sturdy, traditional, reassuringly rugged pieces - a heart-warming Welsh dresser, perhaps, or a splendidly solid table around which 20 or so of your friends could comfortably muster. But the work that this 35-year-old former Army officer is producing is sleek, elegant, curvaceaous and polished much more thoroughbred than shire.
'I always wanted to work with wood but when I left school I wasn't brave enough to consider cabinetmaking as a serious option, so I joined the Army instead,' he says. 'I spent years being driven around in tanks while fine-tuning designs in my head.' But active service in the Gulf War in 1991 made Morley 're-evaluate life's priorities', and JM Furniture was born."
