Matthew Mccann

I like to think of my work as “quiet furniture”, restful and calming.

After graduating from The London College of Furniture in 1986, I worked with the prestigious London firm Osiris of Greenwich. This early experience of working with the best makers and designers gave me the essential understanding of quality and creativity. Commissions included
furniture for Conran, Volvo, Guinness, Robert Fleming Merchant Bank, BP and many others. I moved to Devon in 1990 and established my own studios in 1993.

Sensitive use of materials
I feel that with the right design it is possible to introduce contemporary style into even the most traditional of settings, creating pieces which although innovative in design complement and harmonise with their historic surroundings. This is often achieved by careful attention to detail, drawing on historical references and existing design details or motifs. I like a piece to look as if it “belongs”, and to reflect the personality of the client.

Sustainable sources
Most of my timber is locally grown. Mainly woodland trees or sometimes the most wonderful storm damaged specimens

Sustainable Lifestyle
I now live with my wife and two children in a listed
watermill. My studio, a former wheelwright’s workshop has much of its original water powered machinery still in working order. After 150 years of woodworking here, it is good to be able to continue the tradition in this most inspiring building.
