Scott Woyka

I have been creating contemporary furniture pieces since 1995. My workshop is situated in the harbour town of Falmouth, with a stunning and inspiring view over the Fal Estuary.

I have one maker working with me, Andrew Green, and we are primarily working on private commissions making one-off pieces of furniture. We also undertake work for public spaces such as museums, retail outlets and offices and work with interior designers and architects.

Occasionally we produce work for exhibitions allowing me greater freedom of expression and the chance to make a contribution to contemporary design and the cultural wealth of the nation.

Most often, I am designing to a client's brief. This process I see as a meeting of minds. I aim to tune in to the client’s taste and offer my interpretations. Each piece then becomes an adventure for client and maker into the possibilities of design. I strive to offer fresh ideas, but ultimately what drives my work is to create something that will be loved and appreciated for many, many years. Finding a solution to meet the requirements of each brief is an invigorating challenge. Aesthetics and practicallity play an equal part; neither can be compromised.

In my furniture designs, I try to evoke an emotion or convey a feeling. Working instinctually, I aim to create furniture with a personality. This may be subtle and subdued, sometimes bolder, more striking.

The greatest care is taken at every stage of the making from the initial conditioning and sawing of the wood, throughout construction, to applying the finish. We use both traditional and modern techniques in construction and the quality of craftsmanship is uncompromised.

I am very passionate about our native hardwoods and use many of them as a palette for my furniture designs. Very careful selection ensures beautifully figured woods are used throughout and often used in combination to enhance the piece. I like to exploit the best from each piece of wood used to do justice to the tree it has come from. Where appropriate, I will introduce other materials such as metals, stone, leather and rope.
