Wood School
Woodschool is a unique collective which is maximising the potential of the human and natural resource of the Scottish Borders. Combining the talent of young furniture designers and makers with the greatly undervalued low grade or waste hardwood from the area we have created a focus for a very hands-on approach to working with wood.
Inspired by the need to help provide new designers and makers with workshop facilities, collective marketing and administration backup the unique collective of talent and expertise was formed in 1997.
80-90% of the felled hardwood grown in is exported out of the country for processing. The remaining stock is either used as firewood, burnt on site, used as landfill or made into furniture. A few years ago local hardwood was unavailable in a ready to use form in the Borders and there is now an alternative to mass produced, imported wooden product available.
Woodschool aspires to product innovation, process innovation and style! Woodschool is developing flooring, worktops, home office and restaurant fittings. The flexibility of our workshop and makers allows for a prototyping service for other designers.
